Instant Ads Set New Pace for Online Ad Buying & Placement

Sounds like Yahoo, Google and others are now allowing advertisers to buy and place ads in the milliseconds between the time someone enters a website address and the moment the page appears.
Dubbed real-time bidding, solutions like those from AppNexus enable sites to follow a person's activities in real time, deciding when and where to show him near-personalized ads. As today's New York Times reports, imagine a guy visiting eBay for golf equipment. If eBay finds he recently bought a driver at another site, it will dynamically update offers to show him tees, golf balls or a package vacation to St. Andrews, Scotland.
It could fundamentally transform the way digital media is purchased - and dramatically increase its efficiency and efficacy - never mind its creepiness.
