Gw_june2011_mobile_roundtable_panel

So which is it: Native apps or Web?

That's the question I post to the Gen Wow June 2011 Mobile Roundtable panelists, Sarah Ortman, senior group manager for consumer and shopper promotions for Clorox, Peter Cole, technology director for digital agency R/GA, and Dorrian  Porter, CEO of mobile marketing firm (and longtime GEN WOW sponsor) Mozes, Inc.

Along the way, we'll get some advice to CPG marketers how to make the most of mobile marketing.

Mobile Roundtable (Pt 4): Location-Based Marketing & A Future Beyond Foursquare

Sarah_ortman Is location-based marketing really a trend, or just a fad?

As our roundtable conversation expands, I broach a hot topic to our panelists - Sarah Ortman, senior group manager for consumer and shopper promotions for Clorox, Peter Cole, technology director for digital agency R/GA, and Dorrian Pcole_headshot_small Porter, CEO of mobile marketing firm (and longtime GEN WOW sponsor) Mozes, Inc.

The line of questioning: How do you maintain relevancy with location-based services over the long term? And when folks get bored with "checking in" at every restaurant or retail establishment to  get a dinky discount they ought to be getting anyway, will Dorrian_porterLBS be SOL?

The answers weren't quite what one might expect.

Pcole_headshot_smallIn Part 3, we expand the discussion with Sarah Ortman, senior group manager for consumer and shopper promotions for Clorox, and Peter Cole, technology director for digital marketing powerhous R/GA, to talk to Porter about what it Sarah_ortmanmeans for Mozes (a longtime GEN WOW sponsor) to get the AlwaysOn nod - and how mobile + location (in this case, concerts and other events) can make for some powerful fan engagement for bands and brands alike.

Mobile Roundtable Pt 2: R/GA on Wal-Mart's Mobile Moves - And The Future of 'Reverse Search'

Pcole_headshot_smallR/GA, of course, is one of the digital marketing world's most important - and most secretive - agencies. And it's seriously into mobile.

In part two of our June 2011 GEN WOW Mobile Roundtable, we talk to Peter Cole, R/GA's technology director, who discusses his general perspective on providing utility to consumers through the mobile channel.

Along the way, we hear about an augmented reality app R/GA developed for Wal-Mart - and we touch on "reverse search," which will shape the discussion with Sarah Ortman, senior group manager for consumer and shopper promotions for Clorox, and Dorrian Porter, CEO of longtime GEN WOW-sponsor, Mozes, Inc. (both also pictured here) over the next few days.

QR Code Interactive Music Video

Okay, the auto-tuned voice is cutting a little too close to Rebecca Black IMHO.

But this is a pretty cool concept: An interactive music video featuring QR codes throughout (they seem to point to artist Shin-B's soc-nets, if the first couple I scanned are any indication).

Sure, it's a pain and the only reason I'm scanning these is because I want to see what this is all about.

But kids might love this.

And just think of the product placement deals Lady Gaga could do with this.

What's your take? Cool approach, or QR Code clutter?

Read an interview with the video's creator, here.

Q&A: iLoop CEO Matt Harris (Pt 2): Gamification, Location & Mobile Marketing for The Small Retailer

Matt Harris026 In part two of my interview with Matt Harris, CEO of iLoop Mobile, we hear about SlingShop, the company's new mobile marketing and loyalty solution for small retailers (see video above).

Along the way, I ask Harris (whose company has been a sponsor of this blog) if gamification and location-based marketing might actually be a fad - and what elements of these phenomena might actually stand the test of time.

Q&A: iLoop CEO Matt Harris (Pt 1): Retail's Mobile Revolution

Matt Harris026 Where are the biggest opportunities for retailers to capitalize on mobile marketing?

I went to Matt Harris, CEO of iLoop Mobile, to get his perspective on what's happening in the space - where it's been, where it's headed - and how to move beyond simple mobile coupons to create rich relationship with customers through the mobile channel.

Greenpeace vs. Mattel: A Social Media Battle Brews Over Rain Forest (Video)

These things are never fun for the brand involved, and hopefully Mattel can make lemonade out of what's shaping up to be a serious social media lemon.

The matter at hand: A scorching new spoof video from Greenpeace involving Ken up-in-arms over rain forest destruction allegedly caused by Barbie packaging (see the YouTube video from the Greenpeace Channel, above). It's been translated into 18 languages and is sure to go viral - as are tweets and physical banner ads.

According to the LA Times, Mattel is addressing the matter with Greenpeace, and says it's disappointed Greenpeace went, in its view, so inflammatory right out of the gate.

You can get the full scoop here.

But what's your take?

Did Greenpeace take it too far, too fast? Given that every company on earth wants to avoid such issues by finding greener, more sustainable sourcing options, is this effort more about nudging Mattel - or about marketing Greenpeace? Or are such social media efforts an absolute must when it comes to creating change?

Time will tell if Barbie finds sources that are better for the environment - with or without Ken by her side.

After all, judging from this video at least, packaging might not be the only reason Ken decides he's a bad match for Barbie.

Honda's 'Super Civic Quest' Spans Mobile + Social In Search of Buzz (Video)

Honda's on a roll when it comes to social media.

Just a few weeks ago, there was that 'Sounds of Civic' contest that could score you a 2012 Honda Civic along with a shiny new music career. Factor in that cool mobile app that lets you swipe characters from TV commercials, and the brand's coolness quotient is revving up.

Now there's this "Super Civic Quest" that looks like a social media tour de force - a massive scavenger hunt to hellp "Cesar" (a world-champion Luchadore character from a broader campaign) find his Civic, an effort that spans Facebook, Amazon, Pandora, Foursquare, Foodily, Twitter, Yelp, YouTube and more, as well as platforms from mobile to the desktop and beyond.

Along the way, players will unlock five different characters from the campaign to win prizes that include Amazon music, Facebook credits and yes, a new Honda Civic LX Sedan.

Kids love these games - and it could build some serious buzz for the brand.

But what's your opinion? Will Cesar's missing car go unnoticed in a media-saturated marketplace? Or will he conquer all?

Read more here.
